Bike the Barns 2013
For the seventh year in a row, the Fairshare CSA Coalition has put together a fundraiser called "Bike the Barns". Participants chose to bike either the shorter "radish" route, 30 miles, or the longer "rutabaga" route, 70 miles. The route winds throughout the Southeast Wisconsin countryside, stopping at pre-designated farms along the way. Each farm fuels the participants on with food from local farms and vendors, with a big after-party at the end of the ride full of tasty things to eat and drink. When I left my house in my toasty car the morning of this year's event, I doubted there would be a large turnout. It was chilly, and even more-so the rain didn't seem to be letting up. I was so excited to find out from the first person on the route that hundreds of people had already rolled through, and I should hurry to get to the next farm before they were all moved on to the next one. Despite the rain, the ride was beautiful, and people seemed to be in high spirits. The ride raised $34,891, which will help the Coalition’s Partner Shares Program, a program that helps low-income families in our community have the ability to get CSA boxes, meaning fresh, healthy produce! I love the work they're doing, and I had a great time documenting this beautiful event. (albeit, I felt a little guilty & lazy driving around in my dry, warm car!) Hooray to all you bikers who raised money and biked through the rain, kudos to you.
